BOTOX® is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures that is performed today. While the vast majority of people have heard about this injectable, many do not have a clear understanding of what BOTOX® is and how it works to enhance an individual’s appearance.
Contrary to what many people believe, this treatment is not a dermal filler. It is not designed to increase the volume of your face; instead, it is designed to relax the muscles in your face.
BOTOX® works by serving as a neural blocker. It inhibits some of the signals sent by nerves in your face to your facial muscles. When you make facial expressions, muscles in certain parts of your face will not contract as forcefully after using this treatment.
You may be asking yourself, what is the benefit of impeding muscle contraction? Well, the answer has a lot to do with how muscle contractions affect our skin as we age. There are two things that you have to remember about your skin as you age. First, as you age, your skin becomes thinner. Second, repeated movements of your skin lead to the formation of creases.
As your skin becomes thinner, the movements of the muscles underneath your skin begin to telegraph through your skin. So, for example, when you smile, the movements of the muscles around your eyes telegraph through your skin and lead to the formation of crow’s feet.
Over time, when the skin around your eyes contracts with your muscles, it begins to develop creases. Soon, these creases become visible even if you are not smiling. This is where BOTOX® comes into the picture.
BOTOX® makes it so that the muscles that lead to you having crow’s feet do not contract. You are still able to smile and you are still able to express emotion, but you do not have these dynamic wrinkles that appear. Over time, the skin around your eyes becomes relaxed, and the wrinkling of the skin in this area disappears.
BOTOX® injections do not take effect immediately. You will usually have to wait at least a few days before you start to notice the relaxing of the muscles. BOTOX® is not a permanent fix. The results of the treatments wear out every four months or so. Fortunately, you can simply come back to our office for periodic touch-ups to maintain your results.
BOTOX® can make you look refreshed, rejuvenated and like the best version of yourself you can be. To see if this injectable is right for you, talk to the team at Nova Cosmetic Center in Orlando. Contact our office today to request a consultation for BOTOX®.
