Laser Hair Removal

How It Works

The Palomar System makes it possible to get rid of unwanted hair. The pulsed light is controlled via a computer and with the use of special filters. The theory of Selective Photo Thermolysis is what damages the follicle and causes it to fall out. This is in distinct contrast to laser hair removal. While lasers can achieve similar destruction of these unwanted skin problems, many lasers also typically traumatize the epidermis leading to the prolonged redness and healing times associated with that technology. By leaving the epidermis largely unharmed, IPL-treated patients can generally return to work or social activities right away without the nuisance of ointments, dressings, and prolonged downtime.

Pulsed light hair removal works by emitting pulses of intense light onto the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair. IPL hair removal permanently eliminates or reduces hair on all body areas and skin types.

IPL hair removal is fast, comfortable, convenient and long term. After a full series of treatments patients see an 80-95% of permanent hair reduction. Any remaining hair will likely be finer, lighter and much less noticeable.

There are three stages of growth in a hair follicle. Understanding the hair growth cycle is the key to why a patient requires multiple treatment sessions in order to attain permanent (up to 95%) hair reduction.

Each hair passes through three stages:

  • Anagen (active growth stage)
  • Catagen (transition stage)
  • Telogen (shedding stage)

When the hair is in the Anagen (active growth) stage its pigment can absorb the light and the hair follicle can be destroyed. When the hair is in its resting stage or catagen/telogen stage it is not visible or capable of absorbing the light and no destruction of the follicle will occur. Multiple treatments are required in order to catch each hair in its Anagen stage.

So, it may seem when you try any type of hair removal system or even shaving that some hair grows back faster than the others. The Light therapy must affect the hair follicle during its growing phase to work properly. The follicles must be caught during this growing phase for them to be destroyed.

When the pulse of light is delivered to the hair follicle, you may feel a mild sting or pinch similar to the snap of a rubber band. However, no local anesthesia or pain medication is required.

Intense Pulse Light non-invasively treats hundreds of hair follicles simultaneously. So in a few minutes, the hair can effectively be treated, an area that might take over an hour with electrolysis or lasers.
