Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Hair Removal

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS  (FAQ’s)

How Does Intense Pulse Light (IPL) work?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is actually a non-coherent laser which is used by a technician to damage unwanted hair follicles. For maximum accuracy, the technician will adjust the exposure time frame, energy level and wavelength to meet the needs of the individual receiving the hair removal treatment. One major benefit of the intense pulsed light is that it causes very little damage to surrounding tissues.

The targeted hair follicles absorb the light and are heated, then damaged and epilated (or loosened from the root). There are multiple treatments required in order to see the maximum results. The results are often called "permanent hair reduction”. This means that the volume of hair re-growth might be reduced permanently. Hair can grow back in that spot, but there won't be near as much hair as before in most cases.

Who is a good candidate for Intense Pulse Light (IPL) hair removal?

An ideal candidate is someone with light skin and dark hair. Generally one’s hair must be darker than the surrounding skin for best results.

What does the hair removal procedure feel like?

Each pulse, which lasts millionths of a second, produces a slight tingling feeling. In particularly sensitive areas, such as the upper lip, it may feel like a light elastic band snap.

How is Intense Pulse Light (IPL) different from a laser hair removal?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and lasers are nearly identical and remove hair in basically the same way. Although there are some minor differences between the two types of treatments. While lasers can achieve similar reductions of unwanted hair problems, many lasers also typically traumatize the epidermis leading to the prolonged redness and healing times associated with the laser treatments. By leaving the epidermis largely unharmed, IPL-treated patients can generally return to work or social activities right away without the nuisance of ointments, dressings, and prolonged downtime. The pulsed light systems use a much larger treatment window than most lasers enabling you to have your treatment done in much shorter treatment sessions. The IPL system is able to customize the wave lengths to each individual specific skin type. IPL is also less painful that laser hair removal, there are no topical agents used during the procedure unlike most true lasers.

Which body areas can be treated with the Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatment?

The Palomor Starlux  has been successfully used on thousands of patients, removing unwanted hair on virtually EVERY part of the body, including but not limited to: back, legs, underarms, bikini, arms, neck, stomach, buttocks as well as facial hair for men and women,

Is Intense Pulse Light (IPL) hair removal permanent?

IPL is permanent hair reduction. The average patient can achieve up to 95% hair reduction  over a course of 12 treatments. However because all lasers target only the color/pigment of your hair, no practice can guarantee 100% elimination through laser hair removal or Intense Pulse Light (IPL). Based on years of study, and successful treatments at our practice, the majority of hair will not grow back; any hair that does grow back will be lighter and finer.

How should I prepare for my hair removal treatment?

Before your hair removal treatment, refrain from bleaching, tweezing, or waxing the area to be treated for a minimum of 4 weeks prior to your first treatment. Alternative methods of hair management during this time are shaving or trimming with manicure scissors.
