What is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® is the first injectable procedure FDA-approved to improve the appearance of a double chin. Clinically referred to as submental fullness, excess chin fat can be one of the most frustrating and difficult aesthetic problems to correct without undergoing a painful surgical procedure. With KYBELLA®, patients can tighten, tone, and slim their chin area without any downtime or discomfort.
How Does it Work?
KYBELLA® is primarily made of deoxycholic acid, a chemical that naturally occurs within the human body. Within the body, deoxycholic acid aids in the absorption and breakdown of dietary fat. When injected into the chin, it works in much the same way, causing the fat cells in the area to degrade and helping the body remove them from the chin area. Because it can be difficult to target all of the excess fat cells in the chin over the course of one injection session, multiple treatments are needed for patients to achieve significant results.
What can I Expect from Treatment?
Each KYBELLA® injection session takes between 15-20 minutes to complete. While the injection process isn’t comfortable, it is usually well-tolerated by patients. The amount of treatments that each patient needs to see substantial improvements in their submental fullness vary depending on the amount of excess fat in the area prior to treatment. Most patients undergo between two and four sessions, but as many as six can be administered.
While the side effects and downtime associated with KYBELLA® are significantly better than those associated with more invasive procedures, it is important for patients to keep in mind that there is a brief period of social downtime associated with KYBELLA® injections. Following treatment, most patients experience significant swelling in the chin area that lasts for a few weeks. Side effects like bruising, numbness, redness, itching, and burning in the treatment area are also common.
