Redefine Your Design!
Physical appearance is one measure of
our health and vitality. A flat stomach is one of the most desired
attributes. Unfortunately for some, no diet or exercise can reduce
sagging or excess skin and bulge of the abdomen. Sometimes events such
as pregnancy or weight gain combined with weight loss cause the skin
and sometimes the underlying muscles to stretch to an extent that they
never return to their original shape. Abdominoplasty, also called
tummy tuck, can restructure the stomach area by decreasing excess skin
and fat and tightening the abdominal muscles.
An incision in the shape of a "W" is
made horizontally along the lower abdomen. The length of the scar
depends on how much excess skin needs to be removed. Through this
incision, excess fat is removed and overstretched tissue holding the
muscles in place are tightened. Excess skin is then removed. In some
cases with a large amount of excess skin, an incision around the navel
will be made to allow the maximum amount of skin to be removed. In
other cases a "mini" abdominoplasty can be performed with a smaller
incision and a shorter recovery period. The lower abdominal incision
can be designed so that bathing suit bottoms conceal it.
Dr. Karlin
may also be able to incorporate previous scars, like those from a
Caesarean, into this new incision. Your personal consultation with
Dr. Karlin will provide you with all the details of the abdominoplasty
procedure and its options.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS |
What are the risks of
abdominoplasty?
Thousands of abdominoplasties are
performed successfully each year and the results are
generally quite positive. Nevertheless, there are
always risks associated with surgery and specific
complications associated with this procedure. Possible
complications of abdominoplasty
(Tummy Tuck)
include infection, scar formation, and fluid
collections.
Dr. Karlin will
carefully review the risks with you to ensure that you
have complete understanding of your procedure.
How long is the recovery period?
The length of time it takes to
recuperate after a tummy tuck may vary depending on your
individual health. After the procedure, a compression
garment or girdle is work for 4-6 weeks as normal
activities are gradually resumed. Heavy lifting or any
other activity which would strain the abdominal muscles
is restricted for 6 weeks. The scar takes about a year
to mature and to form an inconspicuous thin line.
Can
abdominoplasty be performed
with other procedures?
Yes.
Abdominoplasty
is commonly performed with liposuction or breast
procedures. Discuss this option with
Dr. Karlin during your
consultation. It is often advantageous to combine
procedures to minimize recovery time.
